For the nation's research universities, going to market was no longer optional or voluntary, it was their legal obligation. However, the majority of patents do not bring significant financial benefit to the host institution, as it is corporations that reap the most benefit from patents not universities; "Harvard's yield has been negligible, if at all, as can be seen in its consistently low figures for licensing income. Though a major recipient of federal research money $348 million in 2004 Harvard's licensing receipts amounted to only $16.6 million that year."[6]Science is never free from benefactors, nor are the results free from capital or corruption. It is increasingly important for the current discussion to develop a more informed understanding of the relationship between science, capital, politics, and the academy.
