Linux 下用 adb 访问 Andorid 手机提示无权限
把 Hero 升级到中华电信版的 2.1 以后,用 adb 操作的时候就得到没有权限的提示了,而且也看不到设备名称。
chaifeng@chaifeng-desktop:~$ adb devices

google之后才发现adb 需要用root的权限运行才可以,为了省事写个简单的脚本:
#!/bin/bash
ADB_HOME=~/Applications/android-sdk-linux_86
pgrep -lf fork-server > /dev/null || ( echo "adb start-server"; sudo $ADB_HOME/tools/adb start-server )
$ADB_HOME/tools/adb $@

I agree that [3] sounds unnatural, and I'm also not convinced there's much of a difference between [2] and [4], both of which amount to saying "I wish I had known Marilyn [but now it's too late]." Geoff Pullum's interpretation of [4] seems to me to carry the implication "I wish I had known Marilyn [at some earlier point in time] but now I'm not so sure..."

You are correct. The General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) must be applied in order to determine proper export classification. In my entry, I was suggesting the Search Engine as an initial step in the classification process. The Search engine was designed to apply the GRI and World Custom Organization legal notes. In later blogs, I would like to present the GRI as well as other methods of finding a Schedule B number.

bks, like most people you are confusing prescription (something needed from time to time to regulate behaviour) and prescriptivism, the belief that everything (especially in language) needs to be prescribed (including proscribed), otherwise there would be chaos. Some things are naturally ordered (say the motions of the planets, the march of the seasons), or order themselves spontaneously (eg the iron filings next to a magnet, the structural elements of a language), but others need a social convention (eg which side of a road to drive on). Whether you drive on the right or the left is the law in the sense of a social convention, imposed by a recognized authority as it cannot be left to the individual since having no convention at all would put everyone at serious risk. Whether a language puts the verb in first or second place in a sentence, or allows particles before or after a noun, and such, are also social conventions, although so old that we don't think of them in that way. These conventions were not handed on from on high but evolved naturally from the interactions between speakers of each language, sometimes influenced by other languages.

Okay, Dr, Groves...but where is there any message about sending back the Census in your Super Bowl spot? It is a joke. It implies there is a location which there isn't, of course. The people involved appear to be idiots. What information does it give about the Census. You are very informative in your blog and this site is as well. But the advertising spot on the Super Bowl is pure dribble. How can we take you seriously when the most prominent message of all, that is placed to reach the maximum number of Americans at one time and costs $2.5 million is a joke???

Jennifer,
To be consistent in counting every resident of the United States, the correct place to count people is where they usually live and sleep. The concept of "usual residence," which is defined as the place where the person lives and sleeps most of the time stems from the first Census Act of 1790 and has been adhered to in all subsequent censuses. It is a guiding principle for the 2010 Census as well.

On October 21 I attended the Congressional hearing entitled "The 2010 Census Master Address File: Issues and Concerns." At this hearing, I not only learned about what census and Dr. Groves specifically are doing to make this census the most accurate and complete census to date, but also what the census could do better.
As an concerned and active citizen, I was disconcerted to hear all the shortcomings of the Census Bureau, including: an address canvassing budget cost overrun of 25%, questionable hiring practices, and a lack of local, community partnerships. While it is reassuring to hear about some of the partnerships Dr. Groves highlighted, I still question if the census bureau is on track to capture an accurate picture of American demography.
In trying to generate support and cooperation for the 2010 census, the Census Bureau should take the recommendations of the California Rural Legal Assistance group seriously. As Director of Litigation, Advocacy, & Training, Ilene Jacobs recommended that the Census Bureau improve the Master Address File (MAF) by using targeted update-enumerate procedures, evaluating hard-to-locate housing units and the MAF, and incorporating best practices into the American Community Survey (ACS.
Overall, Ms. Jacobs stressed that Census needed to "go beyond the useful, but basic, cooperation typical of local Complete Count Committees and the basic cheerleading function of encouraging census participation."
As we move closer to April 1st, I can only hope that the Bureau will take these suggestions to heart and ensure that the 2010 census IS the most accurate and complete census to date.

Hmmm...thought this five-point question from a recent exam of mine would supplement the previous Comments well:
3. For each of the following, determine whether discrete-type (D) or continuous-type (C) numerical data result from it. (Circle D or C.)
(a) Time: D C
(b) Rate of speed: D C
(c) Number of persons: D C
(d) Amount of something: D C
(e) Number of something: D C
Now, it would be hard to believe someone at the Bureau
would consider the answer to Part (d) to be D, but, unfortunately, that's just what the sentence "This mismarking would result in responses that double the amount of circles" indicates...

Of course that's how people pronounce it; that's why so many people misanalyze it. But I think it's meaningful to call it a misanalysis rather than something more neutral. There's a lot of evidence for "have" being the underlying token there in standard English.

I am glad someone has written about this. I was struck by the fact that Joan Acocella uses Hitchings' awareness of this disappearing distinction - about which she appears to be in denial - as evidence that Hitchings is a snob. She expands on this by suggesting that it's funny he notices this while manifesting no uncertainty of his own about "who" and "whom". This leads to the signoff at the end of the piece about how he'd rather take the Rolls - but you can walk. I thought this kind of cheap ad hominem criticism was hardly befitting of the New Yorker. It's an example of the very poor logic of this review - my annoyance at it being what brought me to this blog (for the first but definitely not the last time).
